Ripping your hair out every day isn’t a healthy way to work or live. It’s all-too easy to let pressure get the best of us, but it’s important to learn how to stay calm, stay professional and basically keep our cool. And learning how to stay calm under pressure isn’t something you’re born with, it’s a skill that anybody can learn.
Here’s how it’s done.
How to Stay Calm Under Pressure
Count to 10
This tip may sound silly, but it really works! Feeling like you’re losing your cool? Start counting. It allows you to take a step back and look at the situation with new eyes. Just those ten seconds will help offer a fresh perspective. You may find that problem you’re working hard to resolve isn’t even the primary issue in the first place.
Focus
Multi-tasking is your enemy and can lead to complete chaos. Choose one task at a time to focus on, see it through and move on to the next task that needs to be done. Slow down, get present and fully engage in each task.
Write it Down
Writing down any negative thoughts or worries can have a calming effect and even improve our performance, according to a study done by the University of Chicago. You can write down any worrisome thoughts any time of day to prevent worries, stress and anxieties from draining your brain power when you need it most.
Take Deep Breaths
Whenever we’re anxious, we tend to start taking quick and shallow breaths which can make us feel panicky and light-headed. This kind of breathing can also impact our judgement—or lack thereof. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a deep breath in through your nose, hold it for a second and release the breath from your mouth. Deep breath in, deep breath out, deep breath in, deep breath out…Continue taking deep breaths until you start to feel calmer. Phew.

Stay Away from a Doom & Gloom Attitude
It’s easy to jump to conclusions when work is piling up, we’re worried that we won’t meet that deadline and we anticipate the worst outcome possible. Instead of adopting an attitude of doom and gloom, use that energy and imagination to solve the problem. The more we practice looking on the bright side of things, the less scary and overwhelming the situation seems. Focus on the positive!
The next time your boss is hovering over you or you have 500 emails piling up in your inbox, take a deep breath and try these tips. You can do it by usingthese tools to carry on! We’re rooting for you.
